The Department is required by law to recover the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas through the collection of the visa application fee. certain categories of nonimmigrant visas are more complicated and require more in-depth consideration than most other categories of nonimmigrant visas. Therefore, those categories of nonimmigrant visas have higher unit costs. The MRV processing fee is paid by all visa applicants, worldwide, with certain limited exceptions, for example, those pertaining to government officials. NOTICE TO SÃO PAULO APPLICANTS: In São Paulo there will be a Citibank cashier in the Consulate until June 25, open between 7:00 am and 1:00 pm, to take payment of the difference in fees if necessary. This amount will be received in cash only. However, we recommend that the fee be paid in advance at a Citibank branch outside the Consulate in order to speed up the process.

Besides the visa application fee,  certain types of visas may require payment of a reciprocity fee. The reciprocal issuance fee is an additional charge paid by visa applicants from certain countries in certain categories and is based on similar fees U.S. citizens are charged for visas to visit those countries.
